The Crusaders are a 'homefront defense' group started by my father back in the 90's to combat the ever growing mutant incursion of America. He started it out of mourning, as a way to avenge someone he'd lost. And while it initially attracted others like him, it soon became something else entirely. It turned into a confused dogma of religion and nationalism. It was no longer about protecting the country from dangerous mutants, but about cleansing the human race of abnormalities. Given enough time and the right leader this ideology might have spread across the country overnight.

And I couldn't let that happen. I sent word to every mutant gang in the city, I picked out a warehouse, and I led the Crusaders to their death.

Or so I thought. The gangs had greater numbers, but their attack was disorganized and chaotic. Contrary to popular belief not all mutants have powers they can wield in battle. When it came down to it most of these people were civilians with pistols and knives against trained soldiers with rifles and body armor.

The Crusaders acted as one, aiming for the greatest threats first, starting with a pyrokenetic. As the woman was gunned down her burning blood ignited and hungrily devoured boxes, crates, and everything else it touched.

I stood on the second story, watching this vision of Hell from a metal walkway. I spotted my step-mother below collecting samples from a dead mutant, her labcoat already stained red.

We will not fight! -- You have no choice!
Stand aside! -- I stand alone!
You're still their hero! -- They are fools!
This cannot be the only way! -- You will see!

------------------------------------------

My father stood only a few feet away, dressed in his blue armor, now stained with soot and blood. The old man looked like he had aged a century. His expression was grave and severe, though the wavering in his voice betrayed something else, "Sergio...why? You led us into an ambush. You betrayed your own kind, son."

I turned to face him, mustering all the confidence I had left, "We've been wrong, father. These people -are- our kind. The Crusade ends with us."

His expression darkened and his hands balled into his fist, "These creatures are monsters, boy. They took your mother from us. They killed my wife!"

I stepped forward, some anger finding it's way into my voice, "Mom was killed by criminals; human or mutant, it doesn't matter. You have a wife now. Janine loves yu-"

An armored fist slammed into the side of my head, sending me sprawling backward. I landed heavily against the metal grating. Within seconds, strong hands were around my throat, crushing the life out of me.

Dad's eyes glinted dangerously. I did not know the man who spoke, "She can never be replaced. Not by anyone. You didn't know her, Sergio. I see that now."

Just as my vision began to blur, his grip suddenly loosened. He cried out and reached for his own neck before slumping against the scaffold. My step-mother stood over him, a smoking taser-rod in her hand.

As she helped me to my feet I caught the reflection of fire in her glasses. My mind distantly registered how hot the room was. I glanced below; none of the Crusaders and mutants were left standing. The blaze raged across the ground beneath us, swallowing the fallen.

The two of us shared a brief embrace before she held me at arms length, "Surge, we need to leave. Now."

Something in Janine's tone told me that 'we' did not include the man on the ground. I shook my head, "No. I need to get dad out of here. Please, get yourself to safety."

"He's not worth saving...goodbye, Kohler." She scowled, but didn't stay to argue when the building was on fire. I watched as she covered her face with her labcoat and disappeared into the smoke.

I turned around and found my father leaning against the railing. I bent down and placed a hand on his shoulder, "Dad, please just come with me. We'll start over somewhere new."

His face softened and tears welled in his eyes, "I'm too old to change, son. There's nothing left for me."

With sudden, ferocious speed he pressed a boot into my stomach and kicked me into the opposite side of the bridge. Caught off guard again, I stumbled and caught myself on the scaffold rail. Dad pulled himself to his feet and removed a metal cylinder from his belt; a heat saber. The hilt was activated, projecting a blue beam of plasma.

As I stood, I drew my own weapon and starred him down. The red blade hummed angrily in my grip.

He lunged forward, swinging the deadly weapon in a wide arc. I rolled to the side and plunged my sword into the bridge, slicing it in half.

We fell.

(Present Day)

"Mr. Kohler?"

I blinked. I was standing in a fake kitchen with a cup of coffee in my hand. The camera crew and director were staring at me expectantly. And then it came back to me. I was the spokesman for Meta-Bean. Because crime doesn't sleep. And neither should you.

I poured the shit out on the floor and walking off set, much to the chagrin of everyone around me, "Mmm, sorry folks. I don't feel like peddling insomnia today. I need to....go....drive...."

(I'm not quite happy with this yet and I'm definitely adding more to it, but I decided to go ahead and post what I have. Also shameless Protomen plug. Because reasons, that's why.)

(I'd retort but third album hasn't come out yet if it ever will and second is a prologue so... yeah. Can't say much there. Other than

HE COULD NOT SAVE HIMSELF
HOW COULD HE SAVE US?
